Place betting is popular with bookmakers and on the exchanges. However, there are some differences punters should be aware of in the event of non-runners.

Bookmakers take into account non-runners, while exchanges use the number of runners when the market was created to determine the number of places to use.

For example, in an 8 runner race the first 3 would count as places for both bookmakers and exchanges. However, if one of the horses is withdrawn, before the start of the race, bookmakers would only pay two places for the remaining 7 runners, whereas the exchanges would pay 3 places for the original 8 runners.
