When Top Trainers find a winning formula they often stick to it. With this in mind, this article explores the top flat trainers in listed, graded and handicap races by season and month, in the hope that the patterns from the past repeat.
Listed, Graded and Group Races
There are three standout trainers when it comes to winning Group (graded in BetTurtle) and Listed races.
Aiden O'Brien is by far the most successful trainer with 99 winners since 2019. From May to September expect 14+ winners per month in these type of races.
John Gosden (now partnered with his son Thady) is second on the list with 55 winners and reaches his peak number of Group and Listed wins in June and July.
Joseph Patrick O'Brien, son of Aiden, represents the next generation of upcoming trainers and is worth noting having already accumulated 38 winners over the period.
There is a considerable gap back to some other notable trainers and delving deeper, provides some insights into the types of races trainers do better in than others.
In Group 1 races, Godolphin Trainer Charles Appleby and Sir Michael Stoute, should be considered alongside the O'Brien's and Gosden's.
Andrew Baldwin does well in Group 2 and below races, as does Mark Johnston.
The remainder pick up their fair share of wins, but lack the numbers of quality horses to seriously compete with the others and do better in Group 3 and Listed races.
Handicap Races
As the table below shows, four trainers have dominated Flat Handicap races in recent years - Mark Johnston, Tim Easterby, Richard Fahey and David O'Meara.
By delving a little deeper, into the class of handicap races trainers win, other patterns become clearer.
Mark Johnston, with his richer pool of talent, unsurprisingly does better in Class 4 or higher races, but still has a few winners in lower grades.
A similar view can be formed for David O'Meara.
However, Willie Haggas, Richard Hannon, Roger Varian, Andrew Baldwin and John Gosden are also worth noting in better class handicaps.
Tim Easterby and Richard Fahey have the majority of their winners in Class 4 and 5, but also have a decent number of winners in higher grades.
Plenty of other trainers do well with the horses they have and often have much higher strike rates than trainers with richer owners to call on. In future articles we will look at the trainers that punch above their weight with their share of winners.
