In Form Trainers and Jockeys Win Twice As Much

In Form Trainers and Jockeys Win Twice As Much

You will often hear racing commentators or read in the press that a trainer and jockey is in form or out of form. What do these phrases actually mean? How can we measure what they mean? How can we benefit knowing this information from a betting perspective?

What does in form and out of form mean?

Defining whether a trainer or jockey is in form or out of form can be subjective and there are many interpretations available.

To help, I define a trainer or jockey in form if in the last 14 days they have achieved a minimum 15% win strike rate with at least 15 runners or rides.

For out of form, I use a similar formula and deem trainers or jockeys to be out of form if in the last 14 days they have had a 5% or less win strike rate from at least 15 runners or rides.

What difference does in form or out of form make?

I have done some analysis using racing from the beginning of this year to analyse the performance of in form and out of form trainers and jockeys. The analysis below shows that an in form trainer or jockey can be expected to be winning twice as many races than a trainer or jockey deemed out of form. Indeed an in form trainer or jockey achieves a significantly higher strike rate than those operating at normal levels of performance. Knowing this information can help you find more winners and avoid losers.

Where can information on the current form of a Trainer or Jockey be found?

I have developed a product called BetTurtle (www.betturtle.com) that provides Racing Form, Statistics, Tips and a whole lot more. The BetTurtle race card (see below) shows the current form level of a stable on each racecard using colour coding. A trainer or jockey with a red background is deemed a HOT trainer (in form) and those with blue background are deemed as COLD (out of form).

Full details of trainer and jockey statistics can be found by clicking the button marked "STATS" and selecting the jockey and trainer tabs.

As a further aid, BetTurtle also has daily reports (see below) listing today's in form trainers and jockeys. You can track latest odds and results by visiting this report during and at the end of each day.
