However, simply picking the top rating is not always the best way to go about things.
We recommend you dig deeper into the form by analysing recent races a little closer.
Will The Horse Run To It's Rating?
Questions you may consider;
- Has the horse ran it's best races over similar conditions as it faces today?
- Is the quality of opposition and class of race comparable to today's or will the horse need to improve to win?
- Is the horse unexposed and could show significant improvement under different conditions?
Other Angles To Consider
- If the top rated is the favourite, look for chinks in it's armour that would make you confident to take it on
- If the top or near top rated (green colour) looks to be friendless in the market, look closely at factors that may result in improved form today, such as returning to favourable conditions, jockey bookings, etc. This could lead to a value bet, where you find an angle others can't see.
- Sleeper type horses, from shrewd trainers, that are top or near top rated are always worth a second look,
- Removing exposed horses, that are near the bottom of the ratings (red), can normally be eliminated from consideration.
