Using Horse Insights To Speed Up Form Study

Horse Race Finish

The BetTurtle Insights feature allows Enhanced and Pro subscribers to quickly compare the suitability of course, distance, going and class for each horse in the race. This is a timesaver and used in combination with other BetTurtle features, allows you to quickly focus on a shortlist of candidates for a race.

It provides additional information, including how consistent the horses performances have been, whether the horse is likely to improve, first handicap runs, long distance travellers and whether the horse is a BetTurtle notebook entry.

Subscriber feedback has been very positive regarding this new feature and we would like to provide you with some hints and tips on making the best use of the Insights.

Horse Insights

In the main, we use data from a horses past performances to determine whether today's conditions will suit. A green check means, the horse has performed well in similar conditions, amber question mark means that the horse is unproven on the conditions and a red cross means that the horse is unlikely to be advantaged.

Here is a description and some considerations for each column;

Course - Course direction, surface type, stiffness/sharpness, undulations/flat, fences, etc.

Distance - A horse has an optimal distance range. Be wary of horses with red crosses. Pay close attention to horses with a green check in the improver column and amber question mark, as stepping up in trip for the first time is often a positive sign.

Going - Be wary of horses with a red cross. Be positive on horses with green checks, as they are proven on the going.

Class - This determines the level of the competition in a race. Be wary of horses with a red cross, as they are likely to have struggled against similar levels of competition in the past. Horses with amber question marks and are also checked as improvers, should be carefully considered. They may show improved form.

Improver - This highlights whether a horse is improving or will potentially improve. Typically horses marked as Improvers or Unexposed by BetTurtle.

Consistency - Be very wary of horses with red crosses. Especially if they also have red crosses for course, distance, going and class.

1st Handicap - Highlights if the horse is running in a handicap race for this code (flat, all-weather, jumps, etc) for the first time. Especially worth noting for horses with a green check in the improvers column. A red cross, simply means it is not the horses first handicap race and should not be seen as a negative thing.

Market - Determines whether the horse is well supported, steady or drifting in the market. Please note this will change throughout the day up until post time. Be wary of red crosses. It often pays to focus on the steady horses (amber question marks), as the odds value has often gone if a horse has a green check. Avoid following the crowd!

Notebook - Horses with a green check have been added to our horses to follow list. If we tip the horse and it has lots of positives and is available at a decent price, then it is well worth considering. Especially if there are red crosses and question marks regarding other horses in the race.

Travel - The distance a horse travels to a race can sometimes be a positive sign of trainer intentions. Especially if the horse is the trainers only runner at a meeting. This is particularly true of horses travelling over from Ireland and well supported in the market.

Odds - Current betting odds. Expect horses with lots of positives in the Insights columns to be a shorter price than those with red crosses. If not then there may be good bet and lay opportunities to be had.

Probability - The odds converted to %chance of winning probability based on market odds. Using the information described, ask yourself the question is the horse more likely or less likely to win than probability suggests? If more likely, you have a great betting opportunity and if less likely the horse is worthy of taking on. This is a great way to spot weak favourites and horses that could be at value odds.

We would recommend that you use this feature to hide horses (click the bin icon) you want to discount and click the like (red heart) to shortlist the horses you do.

It is then worth comparing the Stats Button - ratings, conditions, form and form plus and/or the Form button information for each short listed horse to analyse more deeply each horse and determine the one(s) to bet.

Always look for value and opportunities to bet horses at larger prices than they probably should be and avoid horses at prices lower than they should be.
