Form Study Guidance
Studying form can be both overwhelming and time consuming. Here are a few tips we use to speed things up and shortlist the most likely candidates in a race.
Choose the races you bet on wisely. Visit the main racecard page and you can view races at a glance. We tend to focus on the better quality races each day; class 4 or above Group, Listed and Handicap races. You can also view the Summary cards for each meeting if you require more detail.
Shortlist the likely contenders. 85% of races are won by horses in the first 5 in the betting. As a general rule we eliminate horses, by clicking the bin icon at bigger prices than the number of runners in a race. If there are 12 runners, any horse larger than 12/1 we bin .
Check the horse comments and horse, jockey and trainer statistics. This can be done by clicking the button. We check the comments and if a horse is poorly handicapped (we are more leniant with unexposed horses as they could improve) or has poor form over the conditions or the trainer/jockey have poor strike rates (we are more leniant with hot trainers or jockeys) we we bin the horse.
Check the horse ratings. This can be done by clicking the button and selecting the ratings tab. Unless a horse is unexposed, we are wary of any horses with red Official Rating (OR) or Form, Speed Ratings and bin them.
Check the odds. This can be done by clicking the button and selecting the Odds tab. Any horse that is drifting or weak in the market we remove from our shortlist.
Further analysis. You should now have a much smaller list of horses and selections can be refined by analysing the other data under the and buttons or the Pointers menu. Hopefully, by then we would have 1 or 2 bets and may choose to bet both if the odds offer good value.
Create your shortlist. For each of your selections, click the heart icon and it will change to and the horse will be added to your shortlist.
Review the results You can view all of your shortlisted horses here Tips - My Shortlist.. The shortlist can help you keep track of horses you want to analyse further or place a bet on and it will update with latest odds and results.
Use the 80:20 Rule To Create A Shortlist Using BetTurtle Filters
At BetTurtle we realise that horse racing can be random at times and studying form can take a lot of time. We therefore apply the 80:20 rule (also known as Paretos Principle) to help us quickly find the horses each day to focus on using BetTurtle filters. Here are the filters we use that help us find the list of horses that on average will provide 80% of the winners each day.
- Visit the Races-Search Runners page or one of the BetTurtle race cards.
- Click the Horse filter button.
- Click the Reset Button to clear existing filters.
- Set the following values:
- Pick Rank: 1 to 5
- Odds Rank: 1 to 5
- Red Shoes: 0 to 2
- Click Apply.
The list will refresh (may take a few second). When you visit the racecards the filter will automatically apply and only the horses meeting the filter criteria will be shown. You can then analyse the shortlist of candidates much more quickly and easily using the BetTurtle Form and Statistical data to make your selections (click the Heart symbol to add your choices to your Shortlist).
We offer a daily pointer report with all of the selections that meet the 80:20 rule criteria. This is available to all Basic, Enhanced and Professional subscribers. Check it every day to see how the rule works and track results.
