How To Make A Profit Betting Each Way?

Picking A Winner

Each way betting is the staple for many punters, but can you make each way betting pay? This article attempts to answer this question and identifies a number of angles to try to increase your chances of profitable each way betting.

Each Way Betting Mathematics

Bookmakers offer each way betting on the following terms;

  • Handicaps of 16 or more runners: 1/4 win odds on first four places
  • Handicaps of 12 to 15 runners: 1/4 win odds on first three places
  • All other races of 8 or more runners: 1/5 win odds on first three places
  • All races of 5 to 7 runners: 1/4 win odds on first two places
  • All races of fewer than 5 runners: win only

A previous Timeform analysis into the mathematics of each way betting validates that each way betting can be a profitable strategy in certain race types where betting value can be attained. The analysis concluded that the races to focus on are;

Non Handicaps

  • 5 runner
  • 8 - 10 runners

Handicaps

  • 8 runner
  • 16 and 17 runner

In the remainder of this article, we explore how we can apply this knowledge using the unique data BetTurtle provides and utilising Filters and Automated Systems to identify the races and horses to focus on each day.

Identifying The Races To Focus On

The BetTurtle Race filters allow you too quickly find the races that meet the runner and race type (i.e Handicap) set out above.

As an example, if we wanted to find handicap races with 16 and 17 runners in them we can apply the following race filters in BetTurtle.

  1. Visit the BetTurtle main racecard page
  2. Click the Races Filter button
  3. Uncheck all the race type options with the exception of handicaps
  4. Set the number of runners to 16 to 17
  5. Click apply
  6. A list of races that meet the criteria (assuming there are any) will be displayed.
  7. The filter will be applied until you change it, even if you logoff BetTurtle (you can reset the filter default by clicking the reset button).

How Can I Identify Good Each Way Selections?

Once you have identified the races to focus on, the next challenge is finding horses that have a good chance of being placed.

One angle is to consider horses that have been previously placed and the number of times it has been placed at todays handicap mark or higher.

Below you can see a comparison of the number of times a horse that has been previously placed at today’s handicap mark or higher does against one that doesn’t.

Placed Horses

Bearing in the mind the number of places is dependent on the number of runners using the standard rules previously described, it is clear that horses that have been previously placed have a considerably higher chance of winning or being placed than those that have not.

This trend also continues when the number of times a horse has been placed is taken into consideration.

Number of Handicap Places

This data shows that horses that have been placed at least once perform considerably better in terms of wins and places than horses that have not.

How Can I Find Horses With A Strong Chance of Placing?

BetTurtle provides statistics for each horse that has been placed at today’s handicap mark or higher and the number of times the horse has been placed.

You can find this data on any racecard under the Stats or All Stats buttons and by selecting the ratings card as can be seen below.

Place Stats

The ORW column shows the number of wins and the ORP shows the number of times the horse has placed at today’s handicap mark or higher.

How Can I Automate Finding Horses That Meet The Criteria?

The video below shows an example of how you can create a BetTurtle automated system that allows you quickly to find horses that are running in 16 or 17 runner handicaps and have placed at least once at today’s handicap mark or higher.

This will help you find the qualifiers using the previously defined rules effortlessly each day.

The system filters described in the video are available to BetTurtle Pro and Enhanced subscribers. You can find subscription details here.
