The Different Types of Horses In Racing

Racehorse Types

In horse racing there are different types of horses depending on their maturity and performance levels.

BetTurtle categorises horses into the following types;

  1. Debutant - has never run before.
  2. Unexposed - only raced a few times and is potentially open to considerable improvement, as it ages, gains experience or races under different conditions.
  3. Improving - mproving and climbing the handicap ratings. Can be worth following until the improvement stops.
  4. In Form - has been running well perhaps winning or coming close.
  5. Exposed - preferences are well understood. May win occassionally, but may struggle against unexposed or improving horses.
  6. Sleeper - has not been running well, but has been dropping down the handicap ratings. Could return to form at big prices.

By categorising each horse, we are then able to perform some analysis into the performance of each horse type.

Horse Type Statistics

As you can see from the totals at the bottom of each column in the image below, unexposed horses win by far the most races (14,094) which equates to 54% of all winners.

This is a combination of the fact that there are hundreds of races for unexposed horses, such as 2 year old and 3 year old only flat races plus unexposed horses are open to running up a sequence of wins before the handicapper catches up with them.

Winners By Horse Type

To gain a better insight into the true performance of each type of horse, we can use the strike rate. This is the number of winners divided by the number of runners for each type as a percentage.

Strike Rate By Horse Type

The diagram above brings a more balanced perspective and the strike rates for each type of runners in much closer than the number of winners per type implies.

In both diagrams we have correlated the horse type with the BetTurtle pick rank, as this shows how good the pick rank and allows the opportunity for bettors to use this information to find winners.

Using unexposed horses as an example, 67% of all winners are pick ranked 1, 2 or 3. This information can be used to quickly filter the contenders to focus on in BetTurtle Racecards.

How To Filter Races?

Manually trawling race cards to look for horses that match the criteria you wish to use can be time consuming.

BetTurtle Subscribers can do it the easy way.

To setup a filter using Unexposed and Improving horses, with a Pick Ranking between 1 and 3 and between 0 and 2 Red Horseshoes (another powerful filter to use) do the following;

How To Setup an Automated System?

Using the filters of Unexposed and Improving horses, with Pick Rankings between 1 and 3 and 0 to 2 red horseshoes will give a shortlist of contenders that will find the winner in most races.

However, a little further refinement can help you find a profitable betting system that can be automated using BetTurtle.

To do this we are going to add the additional filters for Top Trainer and Trainer Form equals Cold to our system.
