It is no wonder that some horses can fetch millions at pounds at the sales, when you consider the stud fees for the top flat stallions.

We thought it would be interesting to ask the question, are horses bought from the top stallions worth the money?
Prize Money
The table below shows the top stallions by prize money for the 2021-2023 flat seasons.

As you can see, the top 5 stallions by stud fee, also happen to be the same 5 stallions in terms of winning prize money, with Frankel arguably a bargain for his £200K stud fee and £11.8 Million prize money.
Graded Races
However, owners willing to pay huge purchase prices for horses also expect to win the most prestigous graded races, such as the Derby and the Guineas.
The table below shows the sires that perform best in graded races.

Once again the top five stallions by stud fee perform well, with Frankel the standout in terms of number of winners and overall prize money.
Handicap Races
In the UK, 64% (3,018) of the 4,698 Flat races run in 2023 were handicap races.

The sires that do best in handicap races in terms of number of winners are show below.

Kodiac is the standout in terms of his 220 wins, however, he also has the most runners. His 9.69% strike rate does not compare that well to Dubawi's 19,76%, with 116 winners from only 587 runners.
